After playing junior hockey for the Seattle Breakers in the Western Hockey League, Van Dorp was not selected in the NHL draft. He went overseas to play in the Netherlands and played for its national team. He was signed by the Buffalo Sabres in 1986 and was subsequently traded to the Edmonton Oilers, who would be the eventual Stanley Cup Champions. The next season Van Dorp moved on to Pittsburgh for a short stint, before making stops in Chicago and finishing out his career in Quebec during the 1991-92 season. He moved to Europe following the 1991-92 season and retired in 1993.
