Stanley Cup Finals Patches
1991 Stanley Cup Finals Patch
This patch was worn by the Penguins during the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals on both their home and road uniforms. The Penguins defeated the Minnesota four games to two, capturing their first championship in franchise history.
1992 Stanley Cup Finals Patch
The Penguins went to the finals for the second consecutive year in search of their second Stanley Cup Championship. They faced off against the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals. The Penguins won the series four games to none. This patch was worn by the Penguins during the 1992 finals on both their home and road uniforms.
2008 Stanley Cup Finals Patch
The Pittsburgh Penguins made their first Stanley Cup Finals of the Sidney Crosby era in 2008. The Penguins were defeated in six games at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings. This patch was worn by the Penguins during the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals on their home and road uniforms.
2009 Stanley Cup Finals Patch
For the second time in franchise history, the Penguins qualified for the back to back Stanley Cup Finals appearances. The Penguins once again met up with the Detroit Red Wings. After losing to the Wings in the previous Finals appearance, the Penguins were out with something to prove. The Penguins captured their third Stanley Cup title and first of the Sidney Crosby era by defeating the Red Wings four games to three. The Pens wore this 2009 Finals patch on their home and road uniforms throughout the finals.
2016 Stanley Cup Finals Patch
The Penguins matched up against the San Jose Sharks in the 2016 Stanley Cup Finals. The Sharks fell to the Penguins four games to two. This patch was worn by the Penguins throughout the finals on their home and road jerseys. The Penguins used their alternate jersey as their home jersey throughout the finals.
2017 Stanley Cup Finals Patch
The Penguins qualified for the Stanley Cup Finals for the second consecutive season in search of back to back championships for the second time in franchise history. The Penguins defeated the Nashville Predators four games to two, capturing the franchise's fifth championship title. This patch was worn by the Penguins throughout the finals on their home and road uniforms.
Jersey Retirement Game Patches
2023-24 Jaromir Jagr Jersey Retirement Night Patch
On February 18, 2024, the Pittsburgh Penguins raised Jaromir Jagr's number 68 into the rafters at PPG Paints Arena. Jagr took part in the warm-ups with the team prior to his retirement ceremony. A commemorative patch was worn by the Penguins in both warm-ups and during the game, in honor of the special occasion.
Outdoor Game Patches
2008 Winter Classic Patch
The Pittsburgh Penguins faced off against the Buffalo Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo New York on January 1st 2008, for the NHL's Inaugural Winter Classic. The Penguins won the contest by a score of 2-1. Sidney Crosby scored the game winning goal in the shootout against Sabres' goalie Ryan Miller. The Penguins wore this patch on the upper right chest.
2011 Winter Classic Patch
The Pittsburgh Penguins prepared for their second outdoor game in three years as they played host to division rivals, the Washington Capitals. The game was played on January 1st 2011 in front of 68,111 fans at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL). The Pens lost to the Caps by a score of 3-1. This patch was worn on the upper right chest.
2014 Stadium Series Patch
The Penguins played their first Stadium Series game against the Chicago Blackhawks at Soldier Field on March 1 2014. The Blackhawks won the game by a score of 5-1. The Penguins wore this patch on the right shoulder of their jerseys.
2017 Stadium Series Patch
The Penguins hosted their cross state rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers, on February 25 2017at Heinz Field for the 2017 Stadium Series game. The Penguins won the game by a score of 4-2. The Penguins wore this patch on the right sleeve of their jerseys.
2019 Stadium Series Patch
The Penguins and Flyers are set for a rematch of the 2017 Stadium Series game on February 23 2019, in Philadelphia at Lincoln Financial Field. The Stadium Series patch was worn on the right shoulder for both teams.
2023 Winter Classic Patch
The Penguins faced off against the Boston Bruins in the 2023 Winter Classic at Fenway Park in Boston Massachusetts. This patch was displayed on the right shoulder of the Penguins and Bruins jerseys.
Specialty Game Patches
1990 All-Star Patch
Pittsburgh hosted the 41st NHL All-Star game on January 21st 1990. Wales Conference defeated Campbell Conference by a score of 12-7. Mario Lemieux was the games MVP. The Penguins wore the 41st All-Star patch on the left shoulder of their home and road jerseys.
2000 Game One Japan Patch
The Penguins and Nashville Predators played a two game series in Japan on October 7th and 8th 2000. The teams each had a victory in the 2 game series. The Penguins wore this patch on the upper right chest on both their home and road jerseys.
2008 NHL Premiere Patch (Stockholm)
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators played a two game series in Stockholm Sweden as part of the 2008 NHL Premiere Games. The games were played on October 4th and 5th 2008 at the Globe Arena in Stockholm. The Penguins and Senators split the series with one win each. This patch was worn by the Penguins on their home and road jerseys on the upper right chest.
2014 Hall of Fame Game Patch
On November 14, 2014, the Penguins played in the annual Hall of Fame game vs the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Penguins won the game 2-1. This patch was worn for one game on a special set of road jerseys. The patch was affixed on the upper right chest.
2022 Hall of Fame Game Patch
On November 11, 2022, the Toronto Maple Leafs played host to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the annual Hockey Hall of Fame Game. The Penguins defeated the Leafs by a score of 4-2. This patch was worn for one game on a special set of road jerseys. The patch was sewn on the upper right chest of the Penguins' jerseys.
Anniversary Patches
NHL 75th Anniversary Patch
The 1991-92 season was the 75th season in the National Hockey League. All teams wore this 75th Anniversary patch on their uniforms for the season. The Penguins wore this patch on the upper right chest for the regular season. During the Stanley Cup Finals, the patch was removed to accommodate the Finals patch.
Penguins 25th Anniversary Patch
The Penguins were celebrating an anniversary of their own during the 1991-92 season. Their 25th anniversary season coincided with the leagues 75th anniversary. In addition to the league anniversary patch, the Penguins wore this 25th anniversary patch on their right shoulder of their home and road uniforms.
Stanley Cup 100th Anniversary Patch
This patch was worn league wide during the 1992-93 season to commemorate the 100th year of the Stanley Cup's existence. The Penguins wore this patch on the upper right chest of their home uniform.
NHL Millennium Patch
During the 1999-00 season, the league decided to celebrate the new millennium by having each team wear this commemorative patch. The Penguins wore this patch on their home and road uniforms on the upper right chest.
Pittsburgh 250 Patch
During the 2007-08 season the Penguins wore this Pittsburgh 250 patch in honor of the city's anniversary. The patch was originally placed on the right shoulder. The league made the Penguins move the patch to the sleeve because the team did not file for a shoulder patch. A new set of jerseys were introduced to accommodate patch placement. This patch was worn on both the home and road uniforms.
Consol Energy Center Inaugural Season Patch
The 2009-10 season marked the end of an era as the only arena the Penguins have called home was finally retired. The Penguins new arena, The Consol Energy Center opened across the street to begin the 2010-11 season. The Penguins wore this Inaugural Season patch on the right sleeve of there home and road uniforms.
Consol Energy Center Inaugural Season Patch (Alternate Uniform)
In addition to wearing an Inaugural Season patch on their home and road uniforms, the Penguins also wore a patch on their alternate (blue) jerseys. This patch was affixed to the right shoulder of their alternate jerseys.
Pittsburgh Bicentennial Patch
During the 2015-16 season, the city of Pittsburgh celebrated their 200th anniversary. The Penguins celebrated this special event by wearing this patch on their alternate uniforms for one game, played on March 17, 2016. The patch was worn on the upper right chest.
Penguins 50th Anniversary Patch
The Penguins celebrated their 50th anniversary during the 2016-17 season. This patch was worn on the upper right chest on their home and road uniforms during the regular season. The patch was moved to the left shoulder once the Penguins reached the Stanley Cup Finals to accommodate the Finals patch.
NHL 100th Anniversary Patch
The NHL celebrated its 100th anniversary during the second half of the 2016-17 season and carried over until the halfway point of the 2017-18 season. The league had teams wear this NHL 100 patch on the right sleeve of their uniforms below the sleeve numbers. The Penguins wore this patch on their home and road uniforms from January 1 2017 through December 16 2017.
Memorial / Awareness Patches
Badger Bob Johnson Memorial Patch
One season after capturing the franchise's first Stanley Cup Championship, Penguins' coach Bob Johnson was diagnosed with brain cancer. He was hospitalized in August of 1991. On November 26, 1991, Johnson lost his battle. The beloved coach was honored by the team with a memorial patch worn on the left shoulder. This patch was worn throughout the entire season on the home and road uniforms.
Hockey Fights Cancer Patch
The Penguins Captain wore this patch on their uniform for one game during The NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer night. Captains wore the patch on the upper right chest opposite of the captain's "C". The team wore this patch in 2001, 2002, 2004, and again in 2008.
Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund Patch
For the first period of Pittsburgh’s home opener in 2005 against the Boston Bruins, players wore jerseys bearing a special patch confirming the club and player’s commitment to the people and communities impacted by Hurricane Katrina. The Patch was worn on the upper right chest of their home jerseys.
Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund Patch
The NHL teamed up with Garth Brooks in 2007 with Teammates for Kids. The program featured jerseys worn by all players on each of the 30 NHL team rosters during one select home game in January. Pittsburgh wore the jerseys at home on January 7, 2007 against Tampa Bay. This patch was worn on the upper right chest of their home jersey.
Lokomotiv Yaroslav Memorial Patch
On September 7 2011, the hockey world was shaken by the tragic news that the Yaroslav Lokomotive hockey team had perished in a plane crash. The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals wore a commemorative patch on their jerseys on October 13, 2011 to raise money and honor the families of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. This patch was worn on the upper right chest of their home jerseys for one game.
Boston 617 Memorial Patch
During the annual Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, two homemade bombs detonated 12 seconds and 210 yards apart at 2:49 p.m., near the finish line of the race, killing three people and injuring several hundred others, including 16 who lost limbs. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins teamed up to raise money for the victims of this horrible tragedy. On April 20, 2013, the Penguins wore this patch on their road uniforms in honor of the victims. The patch was worn on the upper right chest.
Stronger Than Hate Memorial Patch
On October 27, 2018, an armed gunman entered a synagogue in Pittsburgh and opened fire. The gunman killed eleven people and injured sixteen more. The Pittsburgh Penguins wore a commemorative patch to honor the victims of this horrific tragedy. Proceeds from the auctioned set of jerseys were donated to the victim's and their families. This patch was worn on the right shoulder of the home uniform.
